Memory Terms
What is "Dual-Channel"? Dual-Channel is a technology used on some computers which doubles the data throughput from the memory to the CPU, for the Dual-Channel mode to function, memory modules must be installed in matched pairs eg 2 x 512MB or 2 x 1GB etc. If memory is installed in unmatched pairs eg 512MB plus 1GB - then the Dual-Channel mode is simply disabled (loose around 15% in memory performance), however the computer will still function correctly if the memory is not matched. Dual-Channel is simply an additional function on some computers.
Do I need any
technical experience or knowledge to upgrade the memory in my computer? No,
upgrading memory in any computer is a very quick and simple process. No
special tools or expertise are required, once the memory is installed - the
computer will automatically recognise and use the extra memory. We supply
full installation guides with each memory upgrade.
Do I have to install memory in
matched pairs? eg I currently have a 256MB memory module in my computer,
do I have to add another 256MB or can I add a different capacity such as 512MB?
You do not have to install memory modules in
matched pairs*. It is perfectly acceptable to mix different capacity memory
modules together. So, in this example, a 512MB module can be added to the
256MB module to give 768MB in total. (*Except for dual-channel systems, if
your computer supports Dual-Channel, it is recommended (for best performance) to
install memory in matched pairs)
Do I have to remove my existing memory before I can add more memory? No, you do not have to remove your existing memory, you can add memory to your existing memory. You will only have to remove your existing memory if the memory slots are full, in which case you will need to remove one or more of your existing memory modules to free up some memory slots (sockets).
